DEEPAVALI ON THE WEST COAST

deepavali-SF
Happy (belated Deepavali)!!! Our favorite part of any Indian festival is the “Habbada Oota” – Festival feast! The feast typically consists of an array of 6-8 dishes, often a mix of vegetables, salads, lentil soups, rice dishes and most importantly desserts. Diwali, being the festival of light, good tidings and prosperity – the love is spread by sharing ‘mithai’ (sweets) with your family and friends. Spice Mission’s SF Diwali feast featured traditional South Indian dishes with a local-produce infusion:

Lemon Rice made with pink rice, mustard greens, red bell pepper and peanuts

Kosumbari – split mung dal and rainbow carrots salad

Potato Palya (spicy mashed potatoes) made with mixed color fingerling potatoes

Pachadi – roasted delicata squash in yogurt

Yellow dhal – with split pigeon peas (Thoor dal)

Kaju Barfi – cashew “fudge” dusted with cardamom and saffron
